The use of ICT needs to add value to teaching and learning in English. Identifying “when, when not and how” to use ICT in a way that enhances pupils’ learning has implications for the teacher.

ICT is changing the way we communicate with one another, access information, and publish to real audiences. ICT encourages creativity and gives pupils the flexibility to experiment with arranging, editing, and redrafting their developing ideas, using combinations of word, image, sound, and video. Pupils from a very young age now have exciting opportunities to produce digital video films, developing character, setting, narrative and genre. Using ICT, they are able to adapt the presentation and organisation of their writing to meet the needs of different audiences and purposes.

ICT opportunities in the English programme of study

During Key Stage 1, pupils learn to speak confidently, listen to others, and read and write independently. They use language to explore their experiences and imaginary worlds. During Key Stage 2, pupils learn to change the way they speak and write to suit different purposes and audiences. They read a range of texts, and explore how language works. In developing their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, pupils can use software and harware to:

  • compose on screen, draft and develop ideas
  • check and edit drafts for accuracy
  • analyse texts, and compare different texts using split screen
  • combine text and images to create posters, newspapers and presentations
  • combine text, sound, and images, with hyperlinks, to create interactive books
  • create and develop video and animations to tell a story
  • record narrative
  • search and select information, using key words, for a specific purpose
  • design web pages to publish to a wider audience.
