The use of ICT needs to add value to teaching and learning in Art & Design. Identifying “when, when not and how” to use ICT in a way that enhances pupils’ learning has implications for the teacher.

ICT helps pupils learn in Art & Design by enabling them to develop their creativity, imagination and visual understanding. ICT provides pupils with access to a wider range of processes and tools to help them to explore and develop their initial ideas, for example, to explore shape, colour and pattern, using painting and drawing software.

ICT gives pupils the confidence to truly experiment with composition, layout and expressing their ideas, and to take risks because of being able to “try-out and undo”, and save drafts of work in progress.

ICT opportunities in the Art and Design programme of study

During Key Stage 1, pupils develop their creativity and imagination, and begin to understand colour, pattern and texture, line and tone, shape and space.

During Key Stage 2, pupils build on earlier skills with access to a wider range of materials, tools and techniques to communicate what they see, feel and think.

In developing their skills in investigating and making, pupils can use software to:

  • paint, sketch and draw
  • explore repeat pattern facilities for design
  • create electronic collages
  • explore and edit digital video images
  • use digital images as a starting point for creative work
  • create animations.
