Self-review Framework and ICT Mark

Creating a can-do school with can-do pupils through the effective use of ICT

Steps to School Improvement is an effective, practical support service that involves a whole school approach. This service can be tailored to the individual needs of your school and includes online materials, email support and face-to-face consultancy.

The Steps are:

Step 1: Where do we start?
Step 2: Moving forwards together
Step 3: Learning from others
Step 4: What do I do next?
Step 5: Signposts to progress
Step 6: Are we there yet?
Step 7: Made it!

The Logotron School Improvement Service (LSIS) and The School House Partnership (SHP) have extensive experience of working in partnership with schools, local authorities and national agencies to foster school improvement. We have combined our resources to provide an effective support service to schools throughout the UK wishing to drive school improvement through the use of ICT and the self-review framework.

The current emphasis for school improvement is through the process of self-review. ICT is often an area where self-review is not as effective as it should be and getting the most from ICT creates real challenges for many schools.

Two key challenges:

  • Creating the right environment and culture for development
  • Maintaining the momentum.

The fundamental questions, ‘How well are we doing?’ and ‘How can we do it better?’ are appropriate at all stages of development and underpin the whole process of self review.

Although the self-review framework focuses on ICT, it translates to whole school improvement. The self-review framework helps an individual school to identify where it is on its journey towards using ICT effectively to raise standards and personalise learning, and to identify where it needs to go next.

How we can help

We can provide the practical support to help a school take those next steps. Our support involves a whole-school approach which encourages all staff to take ownership and contribute to the direction and rate of progress that the school adopts for its individual context.

Within the self-review framework there is an opportunity for a school to gain a national award, the ICT Mark, in recognition of the progress it has made in its use of ICT. To achieve this award a school needs to seek accreditation from a qualified ICT Mark assessor. We have a number of highly qualified assessors as part of our team.

In addition to the target set by the DfES for all pupils to have their own personalised learning space by 2008, there is also an expectation that 80% of schools and colleges will be using the self-review framework and making progress through it.

The support package consists of:

  • A free diagnostic meeting to identify strengths and areas for development and to propose appropriate levels of support from those detailed below (provided the school takes up some support or the ICT Mark accreditation)
  • Level 1: Access to online support materials per Element
  • Level 2: Access to online support materials plus telephone and/or email support from a consultant per Element
  • Level 3: Access to online support materials, telephone and/or email support plus face-to-face consultancy per Element
